Day 20: Something Orange.
I’ve grown to associate orange with buddhism. I actually really didn’t like the color when I was younger but I’ve grown more fond now.
What’s it with me and oil pastels lately?
Day 16: Inspiration.
Another fairly quick drawing, based on a few cave paintings I found online. Why cave paintings? Well, I’ll keep it short and to the point (I can go on about this for a while); I think cave paintings open up a lot of things to think about if you take a moment to sit down and reflect. Our ancestors painted these beautiful depictions of animals leaping and running with simple lines and simple pigments. We’ll never know exactly why they did it. There’s several theories: they did it to magically gain favor in hunt, or they did it because they honored and feared these animals and drew them out of respect, or they may be depictions linked to constellations, or…
Fact is, it’s hard not to look at them and be completely struck by these lines and scratches that have survived millennia and are still vibrant and mysterious. I have visited some of these sites in France and it is hard to imagine how they even managed to draw them in those dark and incredibly tight areas, very far away from the cave entrances, let alone that they managed to draw these animals in such a recognizable way. The awe and wonder I felt even, just a year or two ago, at the sight of them, though…
… Anyway I’m gonna cut it short here or I’ll keep going. But yeah. Knowing that my ancestors painted beautiful things in dark caves for unknown reasons is a major source of inspiration to me and my own work.
Day 14: Favorite Fairytale.
Well as always I followed my gut feeling instead of thinking about what my fave fairytale is for hours. Unfortunatly the first thing that came to mind was Little Red Riding Hood which made me go “Lame.” because it’s such a cliché, but there you.
I have to admit though I always did like that story, especially the part where she got devoured by the Wolf and somehow managed to… survive? And then got cut out of there by the Hunter and replaced by rocks?
Anyway, that’s what I remember… So I drew that bit, before the Hunter freed her. Again, it’s not perfect but I really am limiting the time I’m spending on these.
I ran out of black ink so all I had was some watered down shitty ink, also my black marker gave up on me… this means 2 things: 1. I’m gonna have to get new art supplies and 2. I had to darken the image a bit in photoshop. Ah, technology.
She’s losing it.
Experimenting in colors. Not sure about this stuff at all but I’m uploading it anyway because that’s how I roll. This was coloured on computer.
This is my impression of Lisa from Belle & Sebastian’s “She’s Losing It”.
Beitel.
Here’s two images I rather liked that came out of some experimenting for schoolwork.
Second image is for sale.
These are illustrations to the story “Knights” by Daniil Kharms (Даниил Хармс). Here’s an excerpt to this image:
– Now then – said the doctor and, having grabbed Zvyakina, tied her tightly with the rope. Then the doctor, paying no attention to the loud cries and wailing of Zvyakina, placed the chisel to her jaw-bone and struck the chisel hard with the hammer. Zvyakina began howling in a hoarse bass. Having shattered Zvyakina’s jaw with the chisel, the doctor grabbed the pincers and, having engaged Zvyakina’s jaws, tore them out. Zvyakina howled, shouted and wheezed, covered in blood.
Man aan het zwembad – Silkscreen.
Did some silk screen prints based on Man aan het zwembad, here’s just two out of a pretty large collection of prints I did. Second image is available to buy!
Landscape elements.
A selection of work I did late 2009, all schoolwork! The assignment was to make several landscape elements which were later combined into one image. First two images are for sale!
