Day 16: Inspiration.

Another fairly quick drawing, based on a few cave paintings I found online. Why cave paintings? Well, I’ll keep it short and to the point (I can go on about this for a while); I think cave paintings open up a lot of things to think about if you take a moment to sit down and reflect. Our ancestors painted these beautiful depictions of animals leaping and running with simple lines and simple pigments. We’ll never know exactly why they did it. There’s several theories: they did it to magically gain favor in hunt, or they did it because they honored and feared these animals and drew them out of respect, or they may be depictions linked to constellations, or…

Fact is, it’s hard not to look at them and be completely struck by these lines and scratches that have survived millennia and are still vibrant and mysterious. I have visited some of these sites in France and it is hard to imagine how they even managed to draw them in those dark and incredibly tight areas, very far away from the cave entrances, let alone that they managed to draw these animals in such a recognizable way. The awe and wonder I felt even, just a year or two ago, at the sight of them, though…

… Anyway I’m gonna cut it short here or I’ll keep going. But yeah. Knowing that my ancestors painted beautiful things in dark caves for unknown reasons is a major source of inspiration to me and my own work.

      Dag Peter!

Don’t be a stranger.
